Watch: Make Malta Green Again – Delia Proposes Massive Tree-Planting Project To Cool Down Island

PN leader candidate Adrian Delia has called for a massive nationwide tree-planting campaign to lower the temperature by up to 2°C.
In an interview with Lovin Malta, Delia said he would like Malta to follow in the footsteps of Medellin, whose urban green corridors have resulted in an estimated 2°C temperature reduction.
“Malta is in the Mediterranean, the second most climate-affected region in the world. Three years ago, our Parliament passed a motion declaring a climate emergency and it was such an emergency that everything remained as it was!”
Delia said that the afforestation project should start by planting a significant number of trees in green areas like Ta’ Qali and Buskett, while also expanding Malta’s valleys.
He added that trees should also be planted in empty patches of land in industrial estates and across the country.
“We should plant trees in every single free corner,” he said. “When I proposed this idea, the government warned that all of these trees would require a lot of water, which we don’t have.”
“However, the complete opposite is true because trees create and conserve water.”
