Watch: ‘Malta Cannot Remain As It Is’ – Joseph Portelli Proposes Land Reclamation Ideas

Joseph Portelli said that Malta should seek to expand its territory by reclaiming land and building new, artificial islands.

During a recent interview on ONE TV’s Grilling, Portelli was asked what decisions he would take if he was given the keys of government for a day.

After joking that he needs at least a few days, the developer said he would embark on major land reclamation projects.

“I believe that Malta cannot remain as it is,” he said. “Some countries – I won’t mention them because there are too many of them – grew their territory by 25% in 60 years, and I’m talking about much larger countries than ours.”

“We have to go there, if our population and tourism numbers are growing, which means a higher demand for energy and more waste generated.”

Portelli suggested two models for land reclamation – relocating waste and energy departments to artificial islands or creating new residences to cater for more open spaces on the mainland.

“You may ask me – will you knock people’s homes down? But what if you go to a street of people and ask its residents if they want to move to a new villa in the sea? And then we can create new open spaces.”
