Watch: Malta Metro Not An ‘Utmost Priority’ – But Not Off The Table Either, Robert Abela Says

Plans for a Malta metro have been deprioritised but have not been completely scrapped, Prime Minister Robert Abela has clarified.

At a press conference last night, Lovin Malta asked Abela why the metro wasn’t mentioned at all in the 2024 Budget, particularly in light of an upcoming draconian ban on e-scooters.

“There are ongoing studies and it’s a possibility we are still considering,” the Prime Minister responded. “Maybe it isn’t an utmost priority but it is one of the alternatives that we are still considering.”

“If you ask me whether the metro is excluded in the issue of mass transport, I would say absolutely not.”

In 2021, the government unveiled plans, drafted by engineering firm Arup, for a three-line underground metro system with 25 stations around Malta. There was a lot of pomp around it and people were treated to VR visuals of the metro at a Valletta tent, but absolutely nothing has materialised since.

It is interesting to note that Abela defended Malta’s upcoming e-scooter ban by pointing out that Paris has already taken a similar decision. However, unlike Malta, Paris has a fully-functioning metro that is regularly ranked among the best metros in the world.
