Watch: Malta Premier League Winner Has Already Been Decided Behind Closed Doors, PN MP Alleges

Shadow sports minister and MEP candidate David Agius has alleged that the winner of this year’s Malta Premier League has already been decided behind closed doors.

In a parliamentary speech criticising the lack of action against sports corruption and match-fixing, Agius implied that this team falls within the first district.

Three first-district teams play in the Malta Premier League and two of them – Ħamrun Spartans and Floriana – are currently leading the pack, with Sliema Wanderers a close second.

Agius didn’t clarify which team he was referring to but said he heard a story of a goalkeeper who was offered a bag of cash in return for conceding four goals. He said that this goalkeeper refused the offer and was benched, with his replacement promptly conceding four.

“No one does anything in this country,” he said.

Agius’ speech was heavily criticised as “mere speculation” by the Malta Football Association.

“It is extremely disappointing for the Association to note that discussion in the country’s highest political institution is reduced to conjecture and speculation when debating a matter of such importance for sport in general,” the MFA said.

“So many people dedicate time, effort, and resources daily to contribute towards the game. Some of the reported claims are nothing short of a slap in the face for all those athletes, volunteers, and most of all fans.”
