Malta’s national minimum wage is set to be increased, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced this evening.

In a brief message, Abela said that the “Low Wage Commission had been established to propose how the increase should be given and as a Government we will be taking on these recommendations and implementing them.”

This comes after a new agreement was put in place for the minimum wage to increase every year for the next four years aside from annual cost of living adjustments (COLA).

Abela said the nation needed to continue to move forward economically and that the government will continue to support businesses and invest in workers.
He mentioned that in the upcoming budget, the government would introduce more initiatives to invest in the people.

Details on how much the minimum wage is to be increased will be released in the coming days.

Earlier this month, Abela had admitted that the minimum wage of around €835 a month is too low and needs to be increased.

“The minimum wage must increase,” Abela had said on ONE today. “Discussions are ongoing with social partners to revise it upwards and I’m confident that the discussions will lead to a satisfactory result.”
