Watch: Malta’s Population Is Dying, Leading Pensions Expert Warns
Leading pensions expert David Spiteri Gingell didn’t mince his words when discussing the Maltese demographics.
In a recent interview with Jon Mallia as part of the Malta Sustainability Forum, Spiteri Gingell bluntly said that the Maltese population is “dying”.
“Our fertility rate is 1.1, which isn’t just the lowest in Europe but in the world,” he said. “To have a sustainable population, you need a fertility rate of 2.1. If you look at how Malta’s population will look like in 2040, it will be below 400,000 Maltese people.”
“You can’t rely on Maltese people alone or it will collapse.”
Shortly after making this declaration, Spiteri Gingell issued a proposal regarding third-country nationals which he recognised was bound to be controversial.
“I think we should open the doors to TCNs, not just for pension purposes – I think that’s a nonsensical argument – but because Malta doesn’t have the full human competency and skills for a high-value economy.”
“For bugger’s sake, the US, the UK, Germany and Australia bring in IT specialists, but we’re a country of 400,000 people and believe we have it all.”
