Watch: Malta’s Teachers Will Get A ‘Substantial’ Wage Raise, Clifton Grima Promises
Education Minister Clifton Grima promised that teachers’ salaries would increase “substantially” but refused to provide an exact figure or estimate.
After a teachers’ strike was announced following a breakdown in salary negotiations with the Malta Union of Teachers, Lovin Malta asked Grima for numerical details on the government’s proposals.
The MUT said the proposal is an “insult” to teachers while rival educators’ union UPE said the word on the street is that the proposed increase is a meagre 2-3%.
“The government’s proposals respect the education profession, which so important for students and so central for all families,” Grima responded.
“They are sustainable, just and substantial. I won’t give you numbers at this stage because doing so will be premature seeing as discussions are still ongoing.”
Do teachers deserve a substantial salary increase?
