Watch: Maltese Cambridge Student Discusses Her Supermassive Black Hole Research

A young Maltese student studying astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Cambridge delved into her research into supermassive black hole mergers during a TVAM interview.

Stephanie Buttigieg is being mocked by some people online, including by a physics lecturer, for slipping up when the interviewer asked her to clarify how many planets exist in the Solar System.

However, a glance at the full interview shows how unfair that criticism is.

Here, you can watch Stephanie discussing her research into supermassive black hole mergers.

“Galaxies in the universe approach and knock into each other,” she said. “When this happens, if there is a supermassive black hole at the centre of both galaxies, we assume that they will eventually approach each other in a supermassive black hole merger.”

“However, there are several processes we still don’t understand about how these black holes are attracted to each other and reduce the separation between them, and this is what I’m studying in my doctorate.”

The full interview can be seen below.
