One of Malta’s best chess players, Matthias Gatt, has confirmed he plans to open a chess club at the University of Malta.
Interviewed on the Fil-Qosor podcast, Gatt said he knows several university students who are interested in a chess club, and that having one on campus could also attract FIDE masters to Malta on Erasmus exchange programmes.

He added that mathematics lecturer Prof Josef Lauri and someone in charge of sports activities on campus have already voiced their agreement.
“I think a chess club at university can help you meet up with others, in a space where you will get to socialise, learn and play together,” he said. “I wanted to set up a chess club a year ago but KSU haven’t got back to me yet, and I plan to speak to them again.”
