The mother of one of Malta’s brightest opera stars has recently passed away, but tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens has said that he wants “her legacy to live on forever and I will carry her with me forever.”

Cliff has been called “a new voice for a new generation“, and has wowed crowds around the world with his impressive voice, but following the sudden loss of his mother, he told Lovin Malta that “at the moment I am numb, in shock and cannot believe what has just happened.”

“I have lost the most important person in my life. She was a pillar of strength, too kind, too generous, always helpful and touched so many people,” he says of his mother. “But I am feeling content and at peace. I can’t tell you why and whether I will remain feeling this way – but I believe her strength and courage and kindness had been immersed inside me.”

“She was such a beautiful soul and a simple woman. Myself, my brother and his son where her everything. She believed in us and never ever judged us. She supported us and was there no matter what,” he said.

Her loving support was one of the things that allowed Cliff to follow his passion for singing and turn it into creating a career – and during his last performance at Teatru Pjazza Real, he dedicated his rendition of ‘Ave Maria’ to his mother.

“The ‘Ave Maria’ was a special song to her as it was my grandmother’s favorite song who passed away 9 months ago. They were inseparable,” said Cliff.

Her funeral was held last Saturday at the St. Paul’s Bay Parish church, in a “beautiful and very touching” ceremony where she looked “so peaceful and rested.”

Far from being struck into inaction from his mother’s passing, Cliff, along with his brother, will be channeling their energy from this loss to contribute back to society, by working with Dar Merhba Bik, a foundation dedicated to supporting women and girls in Malta, and encourages anyone who wants to help to donate to the foundation.

“My main aim for now is to help and encourage women to be strong and this is why we have asked for donations to Dar Merhba Bik. It is a very special place for my brother and I and we will be working to help them and create more awareness for these fantastic people,” he said. “These women go through hell, and there isn’t enough help and awareness.”

“My mission is to now help people and hope to give hope and courage that life is indeed beautiful,” he said. “It is way too short and there is no time for stress and worry and anxieties.”

Our sincerest condolences to the Zammit Stevens family.
