Watch: Maltese TV Presenter Voices Concern Over Travel Influencers ‘Imposing Undue Pressure’
Maltese TV presenter Sarah Bajada has warned that people might be facing undue pressure as a result of influencers not disclosing that holidays are being paid for by a third party.
“We must keep in mind that influencers get paid to promote certain products,” Bajada – the host of The Voice Kids – said during a recent Popolin debate about social media.
“How many people can truly afford to spend so much money on an extravagant holiday? Do we understand that we’re seeing an advert when we view their posts?”
“It’s one thing looking at an advert of two models that we know is an advert and another thing looking at a post of someone who really, for example, went to Disneyland with her son. When you see these posts, you automatically wonder why you cannot take your son to Disneyland too and perhaps decide to work longer hours.”
“I would be imposing extra pressure on myself to keep up with an influencer when that influencer would have actually been paid to do that. This is very worrying.”
However, Bajada’s point of view was challenged by Demaris Agius, one of several Maltese influencers in the audience, who said people are actually more attuned to marketing than they used to be.
“We used to see these things on TV – meals, diets, flights, people going to Africa and wherever… these are normal things,” she said.
“In fact, we still see sales of products that we can’t be sure work or not. These things have been going on for a while.”
