Watch: Matthew Calleja Says Robots Can Help Tackle Malta’s Overpopulation Problem

Matthew Calleja, a project operations manager, said that robots could help Malta tackle its overpopulation problem.
During a recent debate on Popolin, Calleja warned that Malta’s increasing population – coupled with a rise in construction and diminishing public spaces – is contributing to a rise in mental health issues.
He said that AI should be seen as part of the solution to reduce the need for human labour.
“The people must decide. We complain about overpopulation but then when we mention robotics, people say that they don’t want to lose their jobs to robots,” he said.
“Robots can do many types of jobs these days. For example, in Ireland and Switzerland, some of their carers are robots. When you call for help, why should a human receptionist answer you?”
“AI can also use a human voice to sound friendlier and can use Maltese too.”
