Watch: Meet Charley Beal, LGBTIQ Icon And Lifelong Social Activist, As He Unveils Latest Project In Valletta
Charley Beal is more than a lifelong social activist.
Having been part of the team that created the iconic Mile Long Rainbow Flag for Stonewall 25 with artist Gilbert Baker, based on the iconic global symbol of equality in love and representation, Charley also had an impressive career in film and TV, having worked as a producer on movies likes Sleepless In Seattle, Milk and Eat Pray Love, as well as shows like Gotham Power and Boardwalk Empire.
As the current President of the Gilbert Baker Foundation by courtesy of the US Embassy, he is in Malta to present his art exhibition Flag In The Map, showcasing the flag as a symbol of rebelliousness and love decades after it was created.
Lovin Malta caught up with the LGBTIQ icon to find out what it means to see the Rainbow Flag in practically every country in the world – including regions like Uganda or China, where homosexuality can face repression or even violence.

Flag in the Map is a growing collection of photographs and stories that reaffirms the universal power of the Rainbow Flag to inspire LGBTQ+ people – especially in countries where their everyday existence is threatened.
A collaboration between the Gilbert Baker Foundation and ReportOUT, Flag in the Map was launched in October 2020. The two organizations put out an open call across the world, asking for submissions of photos of people flying their Pride Flags. The resulting images came in from scores of countries and were curated for an emotionally powerful book.
