WATCH: Minister Explains Logic Behind Malta’s New Drug Reform: ‘We Want A Court Of Justice, Not Of Law’

Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis has sat down with Lovin Malta to explain the logic behind a new drug reform he proposed.

The bill, which is completely separate from the proposed cannabis reform, intends to give the courts more flexibility when ruling on cases involving drugs.

It will widen the concept of drug sharing, make the Drugs Board more accountable to the courts, remove a clause which prohibits the drug rehabilitation law kicking in when drugs are used where youths habitually meet, and treat drug suspects who cooperate with the police more leniently.

“We want a court of justice, not a court of law,” he said, warning that the current drug laws are too restrictive, forcing magistrates to imprison people even if they don’t think they deserve such a harsh punishment.

However, he made it clear that the government will maintain its strong stance against real drug traffickers, describing them as “parasites of society”.
