Energy Minister Miriam Dalli has said progress has been in tackling power cuts and improving energy distribution by arguing that the crisis wasn’t as bad as it was last summer.

“People spent long hours without electricity last year,” Dalli said during a debate on Xtra with PN MP Ryan Callus.

“When I observe Enemalta’s data, I can see that the number of interruptions declined by 80% in the areas where we reinforced the grid, and the time it took for power to return was very minimal.”

She said that this year, only the people of Gżira and Kerċem experienced extensive power cuts, with the longest one hitting Gżira for up to 19 hours.

Ten days ago, Dalli had said that investment in the upgrade of cable networks over the past 12 months meant towns like Naxxar and Mosta aren’t experiencing any power cuts this year. However, both towns ended up experiencing a power cut that same afternoon.
