Watch: Mosta, Attard And Central Malta Flood As Sudden Downpour Of Rain Hits Streets Hard

Article Featured Image

Several localities in central Malta were flooded after a sudden downpour erupted early in the afternoon.

The heavy but short-lived rains come after an initial downpour yesterday, coming in the middle of a very hot summer, with the sudden change of weather catching some off-guard.

Cars and pedestrians moving through the streets and roads of Mosta, Birkirkara and Attard found themselves dealing with a sizeable amount of rainwater, with small waves forming each time a vehicle passed.

This is the second consecutive day of rains in Malta, which are known locally as L-Għerejjex ta’ Santa Marija.

The rains typically occur mid-August – however, festa organisers and enthusiasts were still caught off guard. Organisers in Birgu put out a call to the community to help protect festa ornaments and decorations last night, and organisers in Mosta had to cancel the burning of the traditional ġiġifogi.
