Watch: Mosta Mayor Admits Lack Of Ficus Tree Public Consultation ‘Might Have Been A Mistake’

Mosta mayor Chris Grech said the local council “might have made a mistake” by not consulting the public over the planned transplantation of 12 central ficus trees.

Grech appeared on ONE TV’s Pjazza this week to defend the local council’s actions throughout this saga, which culminated in a U-turn this week following intense pressure by activists and an intervention by Prime Minister Robert Abela.

“Perhaps the local council made a mistake but it cannot consult the public on every project,” Grech said.

“Obviously, things like traffic management and revamping the village square merited public consultation but the transplantation of a tree usually doesn’t.”

“However, public feedback showed that people wanted to be consulted, so if the council made a mistake it was in this regard.”

Grech also stressed that the reason a vote wasn’t taken at the local council over the uprooting of the trees was that all councillors had already approved it.
