Malta’s weightlifting queen Yazmin Zammit Stevens has just gone and done the island proud again by smashing her own impressive national records at this year’s European Weightlifting Championships in Batumi, Georgia.

This is her second time competing in the European Championships, and she performed exceptionally well, competing in the 64kg girls category. She outdid her personal best, even when competing at a lower weight category than she had last time round.

At a point, Yazmin lifted a total of 189kg; 86kg in the snatch and 103kg in the clean and jerk, improving her personal best by 10 kilos

European Championships are the equivalent of a gold level Olympic qualification event, and the fact that Zammit Stevens improved her best pushed her higher up in her Olympic qualification. By the end of the competition, Yazmin had ranked 15th overall in her weight class.

Yazmin is currently gearing up to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, and these competitions are helping her to increase her chance of qualifying. If you want to support her and help her reach her goals, you can donate here.
