Neil Agius has opened up on the vivid hallucinations he experienced during his epic, world-record breaking swim around the Maltese Islands.

The ultra-endurance swimmer said he made a conscious effort not to hallucinate after learning lessons from his 2021 swim from Linosa to Gozo.

“It’s very intimidating because you’re in the water, not in a safe space but in a vulnerable space and state,” Neil told his followers. “After learning from my Linosa swim, my game plan was to not let the hallucinations happen because it takes you off on a tangent.”

Neil said he stuck to this plan for the most part, but 60 hours of non-stop swimming can play tricks on the mind and he started to hallucinate somewhere along the way. His visions were similar to his previous ones, when he saw an Atlantis-like city of people underneath him.

“It took me to the same trip it did four years ago, seeing Atlantis and seeing people underneath me but this time it was a different tribe,” Neil said. “It was like a manta ray with a very long, thin wingspan that was gliding underneath me. And at some point the people stood up, flipped their wings around them, and walked off.”

“And there were people walking off and walking around, and all of this was happening underneath me.”

Neil said explaining the potential meaning of these hallucinations would take him at least 20 minutes and promised to go into detail at an upcoming breathwork workshop, the details of which will be announced soon.
