Watch: No Deposit Cars Publishes Snarky AI-Powered Video In Response To Angry Customers

Facing potential legal action and police investigations, car rental company No Deposit Cars has published a three-minute long AI-powered video to defend its operations and push back at criticism.

The video was published in response to a recent MaltaToday article about complaints aired by some of their clients and mockingly described the journalists who wrote it as “our good friends”.

No Deposit Cars, which is owned by suspected kidnapper Christian Borg, operates by selling cars at zero down payment costs, with customers paying for the vehicle through monthly instalments.

In the video, it defended its decision to install cars with GPS trackers pending the full payment of the instalments, despite the Data and Information Commissioner warning they are in breach of data protection laws.

“As stated in the user agreement, all vehicles may be supplied with a GPS tracking device which shall allow the owner and company representatives to track it and allow the company to retrieve it when it believes the user isn’t using it in line with our regulations,” No Deposit Cars said. “The property remains the company’s until it is fully paid. Rest assured that the owner or authorised persons have no interest in searching for our clients’ location for no valid reason.”

“Should an existing customer who is still paying the instalments like to get rid of the GPS, then doing so is a very simple step as soon as the vehicle is paid for in full.”

No Deposit Cars said that once a client misses three consecutive instalments, the company automatically instigates legal proceedings against them to recoup the money. It said that while it can restructure repayment programmes for clients experiencing financial problems, the clients must inform them in advance and not ignore their phone calls.

They invited aggrieved customers to sit down with its managing director Joe Camenzuli over a coffee to try and reach a solution but not to expect any arrears to be forgiven.

“We have a large portfolio of customers abiding by the regulations but there is always a percentage which do not. We don’t force anyone to buy a vehicle from us and there are many secondhand dealers on the island. Should someone feel these conditions are too intrusive, then simply don’t buy a vehicle from us,” they concluded.

On Thursday, a group of 26 No Deposit Cars customers filed a judicial protest to call for a police investigation into the car rental company, warning that Borg “participated in a criminal conspiracy”. They said the company forced them to pay over €1,000 in contraventions, failed to produce proper receipts and didn’t inform them in advance of the GPS tracking device.

The judicial protest, signed by Jason Azzopardi and Kris Busiest, alleges that Borg had boasted of his connections to people in power and told clients that police won’t do anything to them if they tell them the car belongs to his company.
