Only Maltese citizens will be eligible to receive the €100 COVID-19 vouchers, it has been confirmed.

When announcing the scheme earlier this month, Prime Minister Robert Abela had said that all those above the age of 16 who are residents of Malta will receive the vouchers as part of the state’s scheme to boost the economy post-lockdown.

“Everyone who is over 16 years old and is a resident of Malta will receive a voucher of €100,” he had said. “Out of these, €80 must be spent on establishments licensed by the MTA, while €20 must be spent at retail outlets that had to close during the pandemic.”

However, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister has now said the scheme only applies to those above the age of 16 who are on the general election’s electoral register. In other words, all those who are Maltese and eligible to vote.

Should the scheme include foreign nationals too?
