Watch: ONE News Challenges Bernard Grech Over Building Collapse Case From 15 Years Ago

Labour’s media house ONE News brought up a construction accident from 2004 as it challenged Opposition Leader Bernard Grech over his latest move in the wake of the Jean Paul Sofia public inquiry.

Grech called a press conference outside Parliament to announce that the PN will present a motion of no confidence in ministers Miriam Dalli, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, and Silvio Schembri.

“It is not acceptable for a public inquiry into the tragic death of a youth to declare that there was a comedy of errors and the only people held responsible are those at a lower level,” he said.

A ONE News journalist questioned the Opposition Leader over a 2009 court ruling that saw a contractor and a worker jailed for construction negligence that led to the collapse of a St Paul’s Bay residence back in 2004.

Back then, 60-year-old Maria Dolores Zarb was giving a Maltese lesson to 24-year-old Russian national Nadezda Vavilova, when the block of apartments collapsed, killing them both.

“The court said on page 80 that contractors should be licensed, but the PN government didn’t implement this recommendation,” the ONE journalist asked.

“Will you ask your MPs who were government MPs back then to shoulder political responsibility?”

Only five current PN MPs were in Parliament the last time the Nationalist Party was in government.

Grech brushed off this question by retorting that the PL spent nine years in government before it implemented a contractor licensing law in 2022.
