WATCH: Opposition Leader Warns Joseph Muscat ‘Wants To Make Us Forget That We’re Christians’

Opposition leader Adrian Delia has accused the government of embarking on a systematic campaign aimed at stripping Malta of its Christian roots.

“The government wants us to forget that we’re Christians, but we shouldn’t be afraid or uneasy to state who we are,” Delia told a political rally in Siġġiewi this morning. “We shouldn’t think that there’s no space in this modern world for us to express our faith, for us to show that we are truly Christians.”

To back up his argument, Delia referred to a recent circular by a nursing manager which ordered the removal of all religious symbols from the walls of public health centres. This controversial circular was eventually revoked by Health Minister Chris Fearne, who insisted he hadn’t been informed when it was issued.

The Opposition leader also claimed the government wants to abolish safeguards for embryos, despite Muscat repeatedly arguing that he is against the legalisation of abortion.

“The government wants to strip us from our faith, the thing which is closest to our hearts,” Delia said. “However, the PN has always been a party which endorses Christian and Christian democratic values, and we won’t allow this government to steamroll over our beliefs, values and morals.”
