Watch: Over 630 Dead In Moroccan Earthquake As 10 Maltese Nationals Still Near Epicentre

At least 10 Maltese nationals are in Marrakesh or nearby areas after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Morocco Friday evening, leaving over 630 people dead.

Malta’s Foreign Affairs Ministry is in contact with the nationals, none of whom are reported to be injured, with some of them planning to return to Malta on Sunday and others on Monday.

“These compatriots are being assisted by the Honorary Consul of Malta in Marrakesh. Anyone in need of help should contact 00212662795525 or 00212661944302,” the Ministry told Lovin Malta.  “The Ministry expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the earthquakes that hit Morocco.”

It is believed that at least 300 more people were injured besides the hundreds found dead, with 51 people believed to be in critical condition.

The earthquake begun around 72km away from Marrakesh, with the after effects being felt throughout the region. Tremors were felt at around 11pm, with some key touristic areas bearing the brunt of the earthquakes force.

Residents ran into the streets to avoid being injured in any potential collapses.

It is believed the number of dead will continue to rise in the coming hours.
