Watch: Peppi Azzopardi Sits Down At Outdoor Tables Without Ordering And Refuses To Budge
Peppi Azzopardi has said he takes a stand against “exaggerated” al fresco dining by sitting down at tables without ordering anything and refusing to leave when ordered to do so.
“I don’t have a problem with a few outdoor tables but some places are exaggerating and taking up the whole street,” Azzopardi told Lovin Malta.
He said he often stages silent protests by sitting down at an outdoor table while whiling the time away and refusing to order anything.
“The waiter would tell me I need to order something and I would tell her to call her supervisor or manager. The manager would come and say the same thing and I would tell him that the table may be his, but the street is ours. That’s what we should start doing when we witness these exaggerations; we should just sit down at that tables.”
He recounted how he and other Alternattiva Demokratika activists had staged similar protests in the past by swimming in bays that hotels had designated as exclusive for tourists and refusing to leave when the police showed up.
“It’s the same thing Graffitti did when they went to Comino. It’s this concept that the people should protest and take action.”
Azzopardi recently attended a funeral in Rabat, Gozo, during which the Archpriest called out establishments for taking up most of the square in front of the basilica, making it hard for mourners to drive to the church.
“I saw someone opening their car door and hitting diners, knocking their items onto the floor. Can you imagine this at a funeral? The Archpriest then wrote on Facebook to ask how we can tolerate land grabbers steamrolling over everyone, people having to honk their horns to get to a funeral, and mourners themselves having to move tables and umbrellas out of the way.”
Do you think some al fresco dining arrangements are exaggerated?
