Watch: Peppi Azzopardi Wants Every New Judge To Live In Prison For A Month
Peppi Azzopardi has issued a radical proposal for Malta’s justice system… every new magistrate and judge should spend a month living in prison to understand what life is really like there.
“They would be living as prisoners, not observing what’s happening but living as a prisoner,” Azzopardi said in an interview with Lovin Malta.
“They will be able to feel the experience, the humiliation, the routine, the food, etc. That way, when they start working as a judge or magistrate and handing out prison sentences, they will understand exactly where they’re sending them.”

He questioned whether any magistrate or judge who had lived as a prisoner when director Alex Dalli was in charge – a period Azzopardi said was defined by “atrocities” – would have had the “courage” to imprison people.
The veteran presenter also drew parallels between this proposal and the way some drug addiction programmes are run by ex addicts, as well as the way some hotel managers are given work experience as dishwashers and receptionists.
A longtime critic of the prison system, Azzopardi teamed up with lecturer Andrew Azzopardi in 2021 to issue 100 proposals for the future of Kordin.
This is part of a long interview that Peppi Azzopardi gave to Lovin Malta that touched on several topics, from politics, judicial reforms and education to migration, LGBT+ rights and the prison.
