Watch: ‘Persuna Validissima’ – PL MEP Candidate Open To Joseph Muscat Returning To Politics

Labour MEP candidate Daniel Attard has said he is open to Joseph Muscat returning to the political scene in some form.

In an interview with Lovin Malta, Attard praised Muscat as a “very important” and “very valid” politician who oversaw a major socio- economic transformation during his tenure as Prime Minister.

“Let’s not forget that 10-12 years ago, we were facing excessive deficit procedures and a shrinking economy,” he said. “Not only did Joseph Muscat turn that into economic growth but he used this new wealth to carry out social transformations. Malta has gone from last to first when it comes to civil liberties, and its economic growth is among the best in the EU, as confirmed by the European Central Bank and the European Commission.”

“I acknowledge these realities and realise that Joseph Muscat led the country through an important chapter. We now have a new Prime Minister, Robert Abela, and I am convinced we will keep building on all the good Joseph Muscat’s government has done.”

Abela has recently expressed a certain willingness to rehabilitate politicians, such as Rosianne Cutajar and Justyne Caruana, who were forced out of frontline PL politics.

Asked whether the same should apply to Muscat, Attard said that while Abela is now Prime Minister, he believes Muscat still has a lot to offer.

“He remains a very valid person, in the past, but why not in the future too?”

Muscat resigned as Prime Minister in 2019 after the arrest of Yorgen Fenech for the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia triggered a political crisis. However, he has since said he cannot rule out a return to politics one day.

Should Joseph Muscat return to politics?
