Watch: PL Candidate Faces Debate Backlash After Urging All Six MEPs To ‘Pull The Same Rope’
PL MEP candidate Thomas Bajada faced some backlash from independent and small party candidates when he said that Malta’s six MEPs must present a united front in the European Parliament.
During an Ewropej fil-Pjazza debate in Gozo, organised by Lovin Malta and MaltaToday, Bajada argued that, since Malta only gets to elect six out of the EP’s 720 MEPs, national unity is crucial.
However, Volt Malta candidate Matthias Iannis Portelli countered that MEPs are elected to represent the interests of their citizens, which may not always be aligned with the interests of their government.

“When the country is doing something wrong in terms of corruption, you should speak out against it, not protect it,” he said.
ADPD candidate Ralph Cassar and independent candidate Arnold Cassola concurred.
“It is obvious that we will approach certain topics [such as trapping and hunting] differently,” Cassola said, challenging Bajada on whether he intends to pull the same rope as Norman Lowell if the Imperium Europa leader had to get elected.
Bajada reiterated that, as Malta is the smallest EU member state with the smallest number of representatives, it is important for MEPs to “pull the same rope as much as possible”.
However, he made an exception for Lowell by arguing that “extreme politics should never raise its head”.
Do you think Malta’s six MEPs should pull the same rope?
