Watch: PL MP Rosianne Cutajar Calls For Ban On Anonymous Social Media Profiles

Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar said that social media profiles should be linked to people’s digital IDs to prevent anonymity and ban fake profiles.

During a debate in Parliament on a proposed cyberbullying law, Cutajar claimed that the only reason someone would create an anonymous profile is to “harm others”.

“I strongly believe that social media platforms should fight this phenomenon more robustly,” she said.

“It’s not enough for them to give users an opportunity to report offensive comments or fake profiles if nothing concretely happens, or if days pass before action is taken. By then it would be too late because the damage would have already been done.”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has proposed new EU regulations in this regard, and Cutajar threw her weight behind his campaign.

“I’m glad to see European leaders taking this topic seriously,” she said.

“We must look at what Spain is doing and discuss it seriously in Malta, before moving on to concrete implementation of measures.”
