Watch: PN Candidate Calls Out Marsa School For ‘Switching From Maltese To English’

Nationalist MEP candidate Peter Agius has criticised a state primary school in Marsa for allegedly switching their main language of education from Maltese to English.

In a video outside the school, Agius said he was informed the move was made to accommodate foreign students whose parents weren’t interested in learning Maltese.

“How much should our society change to adapt to foreigners?” he questioned. “If I want to talk to a local council in Brussels, I have to speak Dutch or French – they’re not going to learn Maltese for my sake.”

“Parents who want their children to learn in English have every right to do so nd there are different choices available for them, but since when have government schools started teaching in English?” Agius questioned.

“Was there discussion with parents? If foreigners come to Malta to work and live, shouldn’t they make an effort to learn some Maltese, especially for the sake of children who are born here? Are we discarding our identity to adapt to foreigners?”

Recently, veteran journalist Peppi Azzopardi proposed that English should replace Maltese as the main language of school education, arguing that children who are only exposed to Maltese street their career at a disadvantage compared to those who grow up speaking in English.

“You can be intelligent and well-suited for a job but if you don’t know English you will fail at the interview stage,” he said in an interview with Lovin Malta.
