WATCH: PN MEP David Casa Coy About Legal Action On Cocaine Story
Nationalist MEP David Casa has refused to confirm whether he will take legal action over allegations that he has a cocaine habit that were published in a newspaper two days ago.
“Whenever I need to take action, I will take it,” he told Lovin Malta. “I have already said what I had to say [in my statement].”
MaltaToday on Sunday published the contents of a sworn affidavit by one of Casa’s former aides which accused the PN MEP of regularly consuming up to €600 worth of cocaine on the weekend. According to the affidavit, Casa used to share cocaine with his friends and aides at hotels in Attard and St Julian’s, a habit that caused him to miss important political events and other private functions.
Casa vehemently denied the report as a sign that his work “is hitting where it hurts” and his staff issued a joint statement to confirm they never witnessed their employer using cocaine. However, he refused to commit to taking a drug test, saying he will only do so if the Labour Party’s parliamentary group agrees to do the same.
The PN responded to the story by saying that it won’t tolerate illegal behaviour from any of its MPs and that Casa has informed the party he is seeking advice on whether he should take legal action.
In a speech today to mark the first anniversary since the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, Casa said that while he has been subjected to “several attacks” in recent weeks, these don’t even start to compare to what the late journalist had to endure.
“It is terrifying and lonely standing up to people with powerful resources who will stop at nothing to eliminate those who stand against them,” he said. “However, Daphne didn’t back down and neither will I.”
