Watch: PN MP Alex Borg Stands Up For Speaker Farrugia And Calls Out ‘Attacks’

Amidst strong criticism from the Nationalist Party against Speaker Anġlu Farrugia, PN MP Alex Borg has stepped forward to publicly defend him.
Borg told me in an interview that he disagrees with MPs who “attack” Farrugia in Parliament, but insisted that parliamentarians from both sides of the House are to blame.
“The day after the theatrics in Parliament, when MPs from both sides started attacking the Speaker, I personally called him up to apologise on behalf of Parliament and I know that other MPs did likewise. I didn’t feel that this is the sort of politics I want.”
Borg compared the parliamentary attacks against Farrugia to lawyers publicly attacking magistrates and judges when they rule against their clients.

“It’s not just Karol Aquilina, Labour MPs have also shown a lack of respect to the Speaker. He is the President of the House, regardless whether you agree with him or not, and there are diplomatic channels that MPs can take if we disagree with his decisions.”
“However, the channel that Parliament took recently was to attack the Speaker and I don’t think this is the kind of politics people out there expect.”
Borg said that while this confrontational style might appease parties’ core voters, it is unlikely to do much to sway floaters or people who are completely disinterested in politics.
“Rather than discussing the issues that people want us to talk about and the problems they are facing, such as the cost of living, traffic and overpopulation, we are discussing the Speaker. Will this issue attract the 100,000 people who don’t identify with either party and don’t want to vote? I don’t think it will.”
He said that youths form a large chunk of these disinterested voters.
“I speak to youths, and I can tell you that they feel disgruntled and don’t care about politics. There are many young MPs like myself who got into politics to empower youths, but at the same time youths feel like political orphans, and this concerns me. We aren’t taking that next step to attract these youths and disgruntled voters to the PN.”
Borg’s comments come ahead of Monday’s Parliament discussion on a PL motion condemning the Opposition’s stance toward the Speaker.
