Watch: PN MP Julie Zahra Urges Malta To Clamp Down On Deepfakes
PN MP Julie Zahra proposed that Malta pass a law to protect citizens and artists from AI deepfakes.
Speaking in Parliament, Zahra said the government should look towards Denmark, which recently proposed copyright law changes to ensure everyone has the right over their own bodies, voices and facial features.
The Danish law would give citizens the right to demand the removal of deepfakes that are published online without their consent, with tech platforms risking fines for non-compliance.
Artists will also be able to demand compensation for realistic, digitally altered interpretations of their work, with exceptions for satire and parody.
“We are living in an era where AI is developing at a rapid rate, alongside new threats like deepfakes,” Zahra said.
“We need policies that protect people in the digital world, and which safeguard both free expression and personal dignity.”
