In a speech that he described as one of his most heartfelt yet, PN MP Mark Anthony Sammut used his late aunt as an example to flag “severe mismanagement” at Mater Dei Hospital.

“Three weeks ago, my aunt was admitted to Mater Dei and in that span of time, she was made to change ward 11 times,” Sammut said in Parliament. “There was a period of time when her ward was shifted in consecutive days, a great hassle for herself and her nurses.”

“I heard a doctor say that it’s become a ‘fill-in-the-blanks’ exercise as they keep trying to vacate beds to make space for other patients. And they did vacate them because my aunt left hospital today. She left dead.”

Sammut said his aunt was originally admitted to hospital with pain in her hands but suffered an infection while at Mater Dei.

“This is what people are experiencing – going to hospital feeling sick and getting discharged in an even worse state.”
