Watch: PN MP Warns Against ‘Right-Wing Populism’ And Insists Party Must Be Centre-Left
I would rather spend five more years in opposition than get elected to government on a lie, Nationalist MP Mario De Marco said as he urged his party not to embark down the path of “right-wing populism”.
In a sobering speech at the PN’s General Council, De Marco warned that the Maltese public often ignores the PN and that the party must ensure it doesn’t end up an irrelevant talking shop.
“We need everyone and, as the Good Shepherd, our party must seek out the lost sheep. However, let’s go down that path without fear of explaining what we believe in.”
“Ideology hasn’t died and populism isn’t our path. I would rather spend five more years in opposition than five years in government living a lie.”
“Our politics aren’t right-wing but they have their roots in Christian Democrat ideology. In the words of Alcide Amedeo Francesco De Gasperi, we must be a centrist party that looks towards the left. While we believe in giving everyone opportunities, we have always believed in those at the bottom, workers and politics of solidarity.”
A completely different version of events was recently offered by former PN MP Edwin Vassallo, who warned in an interview with Lovin Malta that the party has actually shifted too far to the left.

“The PN doesn’t risk being different from the government on liberal issues and is now just a copy of the original,” Vassallo said. “We have lost political and democratic alternatives, and we now have two shops selling the same thing.”
“Market monopolies are illegal as per competition law but liberal monopolies have taken over both parties.”
