Watch: PN MPs And Activists Hold Up Mahsa Amini Photos In Solidarity With Iranian Protestors
A group of Nationalist MPs and activists – including PN leader Bernard Grech – have held up photos of the late Mahsa Amini in a demonstration of support for Iranian protestors.
The video was the initiative of PN MP Rebekah Borg, who collaborated with two party branches – FOIPN and MNPN – to put it into action.
FOIPN president Jamie Vella urged the people of Malta to learn some lessons from the courage displayed by Iranian protestors.
“We live in a country where we more or less benefit from [freedom of expression] and I get concerned when I see people frustrated with a number of realities in Malta but not utilising this freedom,” Vella said.
“Meanwhile, we’re seeing these very courageous Iranian women turning the world upside down through enormous personal risk to their own lives. We should learn a bit from the courage shown by these protestors.”
Amini died in custody on 16th September after being arrested by Iran’s morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab “improperly”.
This triggered a wave of protests and unrest in the country, with women burning their hijabs, waving them in the air and cutting their hair in public.
Iranian security forces reacted in force, with the Iran Human Rights NGO estimating that over 200 people have been killed.
