WATCH: Priest Who Endorsed Norman Lowell: ‘Malta’s Economy Based On Structures Of Sin’
A Maltese priest who caused a stir when he endorsed Imperium Europa leader Norman Lowell has taken aim at the island’s economy, warning it is based on the “structures of sin”.
“The Maltese economy is based on the structures of sin, on gaming and financial services,” Fr David Muscat said in an interview with Imperium Europa. “They call it tax planning, but all the world’s newspapers have said our economy is growing because we have become a fiscal paradise. That’s why foreigners are coming here.”
“All this prosperity is emerging from structures of sin, and popes have always said that for there to be true peace, there must first be justice.”
“Ironically, out of all people, it was Norman Lowell who spoke about this. The Pope has said the demon enters through our pockets and that’s what happened over here. We’ve based our economy on this financial speculation.”
After his endorsement of Lowell, Archbishop Charles Scicluna reprimanded Fr Muscat, stating the Church disassociates itself from ideologies that sow hatred and discrimination on the basis of race or culture.
In his interview, Fr Muscat said he wasn’t surprised by the backlash to his endorsement, arguing that even Jesus was criticised for the company he kept. He also claimed that several other priests agree with him but won’t say so publicly out of fear of repercussion.
