Watch: Private Garbage Collector Caught Mixing Black Bags With Recycling By Qawra Resident
A private garbage collector caught mixing black bags with recycling bags from an apartment’s trash room was confronted and filmed by an angry Qawra resident.
Sharing the videos with Lovin Malta, the resident can be heard confronting the man as he threw the different bags into the same garbage truck – and this is far from the first time this has happened.
When the woman tried to question the garbage collector, he blankly stared back at her with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
“I live in Qawra along Triq il-Port Ruman. In our building, we have a very convenient trash room, at least our part of the sidewalk is always clear and easy to walk on,” the resident told Lovin Malta.
“The issue here is that the drivers or the collection trucks fail to observe the rules that are directly in the most prominent scope of their jobs,” she lamented.
“Why do we have to wash out containers, use water, make space for an extra bin, and take bags out separately, when the people who collect the waste make all the efforts useless?”
“They should come with one truck to take the mixed black bags from the bin labelled accordingly, and another car has to come to pick up the recycling from another bin, also labeled. But what they do is take all the containers and dump them in one truck for mixed trash.”
She continued to note how this all seems even more bizarre when considering that the government recently announced that those who do not separate their trash appropriately will be fined, as it’s against the law.
“How are they putting not only the responsibility for saving nature on people instead of corporations but also threatening citizens with punishment, when workers are so disrespectful and blind to their duties? “
The resident explained how she attempted to contact the condominium and local council but did not manage to get any answer.
“And this has been happening, at least I’ve seen it now three times, and it was a different person each time. So probably every time they do this.”
“Every time I’ve tried to speak to the attendant, they were either dismissive, ignored me, or were extremely rude.”
Lovin Malta reached out to WasteServ, to enquire whether it would know anything about such a case, and it assured that it has informed the relevant authorities about this.
“WasteServ does not collect municipal waste from the streets. The vehicle and employee seen in the footage are not in any way related to WasteServ.”
“However, we informed the relevant authorities about this incident.”
“We inspect all trucks that enter our facility. If waste is not delivered in line with applicable guidelines and regulations, appropriate action is taken on the spot.”
