Watch: Protestors Hit Valletta Streets Demanding Answers Over Malta’s Femicide Problem

Maltese citizens, activists and demonstrators hit the streets of Valletta and Floriana to demand answers and action on Malta’s femicide problem.

Moviment Graffitti, Women’s Rights Foundation, Young Progressive Beings, Integra Foundation and several other organisations and members of the public demanded “authorities take responsibility for this gross failure”.

The action comes after the murder of Maltese mother Bernice Cassar, allegedly at the hands of her estranged partner, Roderick Cassar. Cassar has become the first person to be charged with Malta’s new femicide law.

Cassar’s murder was just the latest in a series of women who lost their lives at the hands of people close to them, and has led to a national outcry for further protections to be put in place – and for the system currently in place to be looked into for being inefficient and ineffective.

Chanting “no more femicide” and bearing placards saying “her blood is on your hands”, demonstrators marched from the Police Headquarters in Floriana to Triton Fountain, then through Republic Street before ending in front of Valletta’s Law Courts.

The march also comes on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – with protestors’ calls made all the more powerful following the national discussion taking place following the most recent murder on the island.
