Watch: Repubblika Head ‘Expects A War’ Once Vitals Magisterial Inquiry Concludes
Robert Aquilina, president of the NGO Repubblika, said he expects the government to “wage a war” against the courts and civil society once a magisterial inquiry into the Vitals-Steward deal is concluded.
Interviewed on NET TV’s Opinjoni, Aquilina said the strategies of Prime Minister Robert Abela and his predecessor Joseph Muscat in this case are aligning with each other.
“The word on the street used to be that Abela was ready to politically discard Muscat if the inquiry were to order his arrest and prosecution,” Aquilina said.
“However, I can now tell that Abela is aligning his strategy with that of Muscat, which worries me.”
“If Abela and Muscat keep going down this path, I anticipate that our country will pass through a very tough time. I anticipate that the government will wage war against the courts and civil society, and this is something that Maltese people of goodwill must brace themselves for.”
“We must understand that this isn’t normal, that the last remnants of our democracy are in danger and that we are the only ones who can defend it. We have a duty to make our voices heard.”
The magisterial inquiry, which was requested by Repubblika, has been open for the past four years and there have been reports that it is close to conclusion.
Muscat has already said he doesn’t trust Vella to be impartial due to a number of leaks from her inquiry and certain Facebook comments passed by her brother. However, he has said he would have no problem with police commissioner Angelo Gafà investigating the contract.
