Naxxar, Birgu, Birkirkara and so many other towns and villages across Malta found themselves experiencing sudden rain showers today.

Though many have been wondering if a medicane was set to hit the island this week, this spot of rain hit some parts of the island harder than others, with some roads overflowing with water.

The rains – known in Maltese as L-Għerejjex ta’ Santa Marija, typically occurring mid-August – even led to St Lawrence festa enthusiasts in Birgu issuing a public call for everyone to come together to help protect the town’s statues “as a precaution”.

Drivers in some areas lamented the extra materials being caught up in the streams of rainwater, with one driver in Birkirkara questioning whether the white debris he was seeing was soap, foam or even construction run-off.

Aside from the rain, today’s weather is cloudy with a further possibility of rain. The temperature reached a high of 32, with south-westerly winds between force two and three hitting the islands today.
