Watch: Robert Abela Admits Minimum Wage Is Too Low And Promises To Increase It
Robert Abela has admitted that Malta’s minimum wage of around €835 a month is too low and needs to be increased.
“The minimum wage must increase,” Abela said on ONE today. “Discussions are ongoing with social partners to revise it upwards and I’m confident that the discussions will lead to a satisfactory result.”
As prices continue to increase across the country, the Prime Minister said inflation was at the forefront of his concerns and backed an initiative by PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba to look into the profits of food suppliers.

“When initiatives were taken to look into artificial inflation of food prices and to find out whether there’s an element of profiteering by food importers and supermarket owners, the PN exploded,” he said.
“I couldn’t understand how it didn’t take the position of the people against excess profiteering. Did it want to protect someone? I don’t want to speculate but I noticed this anomaly. Importers shouldn’t excess capitalise on the international situation, particularly when it comes to essential food and medicinal products.”
“My conscience doesn’t allow me to stay quiet.”
Should Malta increase its minimum wage?
