Malta will soon ban employers from paying salaries in cash, Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced.

In an interview on ONE this morning, Abela said the legal notice – which will be introduced in the coming days – will oblige employers to pay salaries directly into employees’ bank accounts, with some exceptions for cheques in “exceptional circumstances” such as when employees don’t have a bank account.

He said this is a measure to safeguard workers from exploitative employers who don’t pay them their salaries in full.

“When we analysed the labour market, we noticed a reality whereby some workers weren’t always receiving what they were entitled to receive on paper,” he said.

“Some workers were receiving salaries in cash but not in full. We therefore introduced a reform in Cabinet this week that will ban salaries from being paid in cash and this to protect the dignity of workers, particularly vulnerable ones with small voices. We don’t want our workers to be exploited and I’m proud to lead a socialist government.”
