Watch: Robert Abela – ‘I Will Know Myself When My Time Is Up’

Prime Minister Robert Abela said he will know himself when his time in charge of the country and PL is up and insisted he doesn’t need to seek a confidence vote within the party.

Interviewed on ONE yesterday, Abela dismissed reports that he will call a confidence vote in his leadership as “total spin”.

“Such confidence votes are only called by politicians who know that their time is up but try to seek an artificial extension of it,” he said.

“We know how these kinds of internal votes took place in the PN. However, I know that I’m not tied down to the seat of power, I have always had a profession, and when that time comes I will take that decision by myself.”

Abela said the PL must react to last weekend’s electoral humbling by reforming itself and pushing forward new policies in terms of civil rights, women’s rights, environmental and construction reform, Malta’s population size, and public cleanliness.

“From my experience in the campaign, it is clear what youths want and we cannot keep using the same old recipe. Even if the recipe gave us good results in the past, society has changed and the government has successfully raised people’s aspirations. However, we cannot rest on our laurels because they want much more now, and quality of life isn’t just about how much money you have in your pocket.”

The Prime Minister also coyly said that the PL must be a “ray of hope for what is right” and that the party cannot be used to “compromise on what is right”.
