Watch: Robert Abela Is Really Not A Fan Of Rental E-Scooters

Robert Abela stood firm on Malta’s upcoming rental e-scooter ban, insisting the draconian measure was the only remaining way to combat indiscipline.
“If you go out, you can see total indiscipline, particularly by those who operate this system,” Abela said last night, when Lovin Malta asked him whether the ban will land a blow to Malta’s alternative transport.
“They don’t want to regularise their position and introduce systems to stop pedestrians from bumping into scooters. Come to Valletta and see whether you risk bumping into an e-scooter.”
Abela said the people were heavily inconvenienced by “dangerous” e-scooter riders but that operators didn’t take heed of such complaints.
He said upcoming incentives to encourage people to purchase e-scooters and e-bikes means alternative transport is being taken care of.
“After all, scooters barely addressed the issue of travelling between villages and were more often used for shorter distances so I’m not worried by that factor,” he said.
“However, since the people were clearly victimised in terms of health and repeated inconveniences, a decision had to be taken as other countries like France had taken.”
Unlike Malta, France didn’t ban e-scooters nationwide, but in the capital of Paris. Also, unlike Malta, Paris has a metro.
