Watch: Robert Abela Is Scared Of Facing Me In A Proper Debate, Bernard Grech Warns

PN leader Bernard Grech has confirmed he is open to debating Robert Abela but warned the Prime Minister is scared of participating in a proper one-on-one debate that isn’t in his control.

“Robert Abela is scared,” Grech said during a NET TV interview.

“He wants to give off the impression that he isn’t afraid of anyone when in reality he doesn’t confront debates.”

Although both Abela and Grech have been leaders of their respective parties for around four years now, the country has remained starved of a proper debate between the two of them.

They took part in two debates prior to the 2022 general election. However, as Grech pointed out, one of them was the traditional university debate that also included leaders of small parties.

“Everything was time-controlled so that no one can jump in, and then Abela used the crowd,” he said.

The second debate was the Broadcasting Authority debate held a few days before the election, which traditionally doesn’t allow any back-and-forth debate.

And with a fresh round of elections coming up in June, the situation is unlikely to change anytime soon. Grech said that a particular radio presenter emailed both him and Abela to request their participation in a debate, but that while he accepted, the Prime Minister didn’t.

“Abela doesn’t want to expose himself to the chance of losing some ground so he only plays where he has control, that is PBS and ONE. This is his trait. I remain open to debate, not because I like confrontational politics but because people have a right to compare us.”
