Prime Minister Robert Abela attempted to make a connection between last night’s attack on two police officers in Ħamrun and public disrespect of police commissioner Angelo Gafà.

“Let me start off by expressing my solidarity with every single police officer,” Abela told a political rally today. “I have full faith in the courts to mete our justice in a way that will send a clear message in favour of security.”

“At the same time, I send a message to those people who hold important positions and who, for months on end, have been sending out messages of disrespect towards the police commissioner and the police force in general.”

“It is wrong to sow this seed of disrespect towards police officers, because you cannot expect that it won’t permeate deeper into our society.”

The Prime Minister didn’t make any names, but Repubblika activist Robert Aquilina – one of the nation’s fiercest public critics of Gafà – accused Ablea of trying to take political mileage out of the incident “to justify impunity”.

“He would do better to listen to the cries of the officers who speak to him, as they speak to me, about the injustices and humiliation they suffer at work as a result of irresponsible leadership,” he said.
