Prime Minister Robert Abela showered Moviment Graffitti with praise after the NGO was temporarily banned by KSU for distributing pro-abortion material to university students.

“Whether you agree with them or not, it must be said that Graffitti has a prime sense of activism,” Abela said on ONE TV’s Bil-Fatti. “We encourage such NGOs in our country, even to open the government’s eyes on how we can do better, such as on environmental issues.”

“I value Moviment Graffitti’s contribution to our society, even though we may not always agree.”

Abela refused to weigh in on the abortion debate but criticised KSU’s actions during Freshers’ Week.

“I believe that the university should be the forum where such ideas are debated and where initiatives are taken to propose them for discussion, and I can never agree with censoring these ideas,” he said.

“I believe this NGO was exercising its right to free expression, but unfortunately it was stopped from doing so. I understand the opposite reaction but I think we should allow youths and society to debate within the parameters of respect and we shouldn’t give a single signal that we are regressing when it comes to free expression.”

KSU has since apologised to Graffitti and said it plans to propose a student assembly to discuss abortion, after which the student council will take an official stance on the issue.
