Prime Minister Robert Abela made a bold promise that AI won’t replace any Maltese person’s job but will only substitute the work currently taken up by “low-skilled” foreigners.

In a recent interview with Lovin Malta, Abela said AI is “crucial for the future economy” and will provide more job opportunities for high-skilled Maltese nationals.

While he promised that no Maltese worker will be replaced by AI, he said the technology can substitute several “low-skilled” foreign workers who work in manufacturing.

“These aren’t the sorts of jobs that I would like the Maltese to take up, as much as possible, because I want them to take the best jobs. These sectors require large masses of people to operate that the Maltese market cannot produce because we don’t have the numbers.”

“While AI won’t replace the jobs of Maltese and Gozitan workers, it can substitute low-skilled volumes of foreign workers in parts, which is positive.”
