Watch: Robert Abela Says Alex Borg Wants To Dethrone Bernard Grech As PN Leader

Prime Minister Robert Abela suggested that PN MP Alex Borg wants to dethrone Bernard Grech as PN leader.
“The rumour I heard is that he’s trying to take your place, that’s what I can say,” Abela told Parliament last night during a debate about the Vitals-Steward deal. “I must say that I don’t blame them but anyway.”
The 28-year-old MP proved a massive hit among the Gozitan electorate last year, winning over 6,000 votes in what was his first ever general election. With the PN still struggling in the polls, Borg’s name has often emerged as a potential future leader.
Abela’s dig came despite having promised at the start of his speech that he wasn’t going to delve into partisan politics.
“If I do that, I will do a disservice to the people of Malta, particularly when we’re speaking about such an important theme as that of healthcare,” he warned.

While it initially seemed he would stick to his promise, with the PM focusing mostly on international action the government is taking against Steward and rebutting Opposition claims that they the company was given €400 million in public funds for nothing, things soon took a different turn.
Abela suggested the PN likes taking its political battles to court because they are “playing at home” there and that they and the NGO Repubblika have successfully conditioned judges to be on their side.
He also mocked Adrian Delia for having previously advised Skanska, the construction firm that built Mater Dei, before releasing his Alex Borg zinger, which caused an uproar on the Opposition benches.
